The original building was constructed in 1904 as a traditional New Zealand colonial two-storied wooden villa.
The Monopoli family bought the house in the 1940’s and owned it for 50 years, during which they added to it and plastered it in the “Italian” style. The Italian Government appointed Guilliamo (Bill) Monopoli the Nelson Italian Consul and he carried out his official duties for the large Nelson Italian community from the Trafalgar Street property for over 30 years. Hence, it was dubbed the Italian Consulate.
Then, in 1993 Vicki and Alan Brown were looking for a central Nelson home close to the High School and city for their family of two teenage girls. At this point the vintage home of three flats needed substantial re-modelling, but the Browns loved its history, location and potential.
The process of redevelopment has been gentle, taking over 10 years of planning and designing to create the exclusive Consulate Apartments. Now the building comprises of three beautifully modern and elegant self-contained suites that carefully consider the building’s European history and New Zealand location.
Rumour has it that according to Bill Monopoli there was treasure buried in the basement. Was it found during the extensive renovations? His secret is safe with us!
